Play is not the opposite of learning—it’s essential to it. Every week, we carve out time for kids to invent, imagine, and explore without an adult-led agenda. Whether they’re digging trenches in the mud, pretending to be forest creatures, or building an elaborate “village” out of sticks and stones, these moments of unstructured play are more than fun—they’re critical to developing creative, resilient, problem-solving minds.
In fact, one of the most compelling pieces of research on the topic comes from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). When JPL noticed that some new engineers were great at technical tasks but struggled with innovation and problem solving, they investigated further. What they found was telling: the most inventive and adaptable engineers had spent significant time in childhood engaged in open-ended, hands-on play—tinkering, building forts, taking things apart, and experimenting freely. In other words, they’d practiced solving problems in their own way, with their own hands, before ever being formally taught how.
We see this truth in action every week at Nature Rangers. Give a group of kids an hour of free play in the woods, and they’ll organize themselves into a team digging an irrigation canal, constructing an entire pretend village, or devising a new game that requires strategy, fairness, and creativity. With no adult controlling the outcome, they learn to communicate, adapt, troubleshoot, and dream. It’s not always smooth—but that’s part of the learning, too. Through trial and error, they develop grit, collaboration skills, and the ability to think outside the box.
In today’s structured world, kids rarely get this kind of freedom. But at Nature Rangers, we protect it. Because it’s during these unstructured moments—between the lessons and activities—that some of the most powerful growth takes place. Children learn they are capable, inventive, and trustworthy, both as individuals and as members of a community.
So when we say, “Go play,” what we’re really saying is, “Go explore your creativity. Go build the kind of thinking that helps you grow into a curious, capable problem solver—one who can imagine new possibilities and bring them to life.”
