Earn Badges

We believe learning is most profound when its woven with growth. That’s why we’ve created a hands-on badge program that celebrates progress, perseverance, and real-world skills. Children earn badges by completing a three-part series of nature-based challenges—gaining both confidence and capability as they move from beginner to skilled Specialist or Master Survivalist.

For our younger group, the Explorers, the badge system introduces foundational wilderness and self-regulation skills in a playful and approachable way. Each badge is earned through a three-part journey that combines movement, observation, creativity, and problem-solving. For example, in the “Animal Tracks” badge, Explorers learn how to identify prints in the wild, create their own tracking stamps, and use their new knowledge to follow a mock trail. In the “Search & Rescue” badge, they practice calling for help, identifying safe shelters, and guiding a friend back to base—all through games and teamwork.

Older children in our Naturalists group take it a step further. Their badge quests are designed to deepen wilderness competency and stretch their leadership muscles. In the “Search and Rescue Master” badge, Naturalists learn to search patterns to find a lost hiker, signaling techniques if they are lost and skills for orienting one’s self to natural features to prevent getting lost in the first place. The “First Aid” badge walks them through identifying hazards, applying basic care techniques, and roleplaying emergency scenarios. Each badge we offer—whether focused on orienteering, knots, foraging, shelter building, or environmental stewardship—is a path to real, applicable knowledge they can carry into the future.

What makes our badge program truly special is that it’s not about competition—it’s about mastery through experience. Kids aren’t told what to memorize. Instead, they explore, try, fail, and try again. They work alongside their peers, with older Rangers often helping younger ones problem-solve, and in the process, grow their own sense of leadership, patience, and responsibility.

By the time a Ranger earns a badge, it’s not just a patch or token. It’s a symbol of effort, courage, and growth—earned not in a classroom, but in the wild. And for many of our kids, it’s the first time they realize just how capable they really are.
